Guest Speaker
The Cambridge House will be the Guest Speakers at the March 2004 Granby Senior Men's Breakfast - the challenge (they have) is to keep me under two hours! Commentary: A BEER WITH THANKSGIVING DINNER

One question for the folks at the grown-ups' table at Thanksgiving dinner has traditionally revolved around the appropriate beverage to serve with the meal. The pilgrims made beer and cider to accompany their early
Thanksgiving feasts. In modern times, talk usually revolves around the appropriate wine: Gewurztraminer? A nice, dry Riesling? Something bigger in a red wine, maybe a Cabernet or a Zinfandel? But wait, how about a beer? It's often the beverage of choice for the guys as they watch the Thanksgiving Day football and basketball games anyway. Typically, though, beer is a pre-dinner drink, with wine playing the main beverage role at
dinner.

This year, how about getting radical? Don't worry about the 'beer geek' image - hell, we're in the business. But what beer, exactly? The Belgian beers could hold up where wine is weakest, particularly with the likes of
cranberry sauce or mashed sweet potatoes. Or a classic lighter continental style might fit: a Helles or Marzen, for instance. And for dessert, maybe a porter or a chocolate stout might go with the pumpkin pie. Portland, Oregon writer Lisa Morrison is even more specific, writing on SeattleInsider.com about suggestions for every course. Wheat beers, Pilsners, and Koelsches are her choices for matching with salads and appetizers; American amber ales, Belgian abbey dubbels, and Oktoberfest lagers would go with the turkey, as would Belgian saisons and triples. For the mid-meal palate-cleanser, Morrison recommends Belgium's most Champagne-like beer, DeuS, brewed in Belgium and aged and bottled in France according to the "Methode Champenoise." For dessert, Morrison's suggests a lambic from Belgium, such as a kriek or a framboise.
The bottom line - we don't have to tell you what beer fits which food. It's your job to bring the beer to the turkey table this Thursday, and spread the word that beer compliments the best of feasts, not just chips, dip and football.

Cheers and have a great holiday week!

Steve B.
